Does anyone know what type of seed this is?

My dad picked these up off someone's lawn at a house he was at. Anyone have any idea what type of seeds these are? They had an acorn-like but bird's nest (curly) looking crown on them, but I took them off before I brought them home.

Any tips on germinating them as well? They rattle around like there is something loose in there.

If the 'kernel' is rattling around inside there, it's likely that the acorn is no longer viable. Most folks don't realize how 'fragile' acorns are - dessication spells death for the embryo, and just a few days sitting around on the dinner table can diminish germination rates substantially.
But, you've got nothing, really, to lose by soaking them for a day or two and planting them. If nothing grows, just collect some next fall and plant them soon after they drop from the tree, or stratify them - moist and cold - for planting next spring.
