many maple.. flush out with a red tinge ... the red stem tells me it is somewhat normal ....

could also be some reaction to cold.. frost/freeze ....

one thing for sure.. being a maple.. there is nothing need be done ...

I'd guess Autumn Blaze maple or one of the other red x silver maple hybrids. I've seen them go into fall color early when stressed. Was it recently planted?

Agree w/Hurtle -- looks like a red-silver hybrid. Hard to think it's heat-stressed this early unless planted in concrete.

Thanks! It does seem like a red-silver hybrid. I looked up silver maples and the leaves have green stems.

It was planted last spring on a narrow strip between the sidewalk and the street. Last year, the fall color was rather dull.. It is quite large. 2-3" caliber and 15'++ tall as of now.

My guess is it's a new leaf that still has the reddish tinge.

Or stress from being in a strip of land along the street, but it seems early for that.

Was the leaf near the end of a branch?

All the leaves were rush green until last weekend (it was cold, I recall.) Then suddenly they are half-red. The entire tree looks like...orange. So this may be a sign of new leaves are coming out then?

The leaf was from a lower branch I could reach, near the main trunk, not the end of the branch.

Check soil moisture, especially inside original root-ball.

Thanks bboy. There was a thick, very thick, layer of mulch and I got tired. Gave up digging further.
Since I posted, the color has been improved (?) a tiny bit, from a redish-orange, to a yellowish-light green.
