I want to transplant some Trembling Aspens. How can you do this without finding a tree that's just a sucker, or can you transplant a sucker? It seems like every aspen or cottonwood is a sucker from another tree. Thanks.

You transplant the suckers. When you dig them, you will find a trunk (often multiple trunks) that emerges from a thick root which grows horizontally below the surface somewhere between two and six inches deep (at least, that is how deep they are on my tree). Try to get at least a foot or so of that large root on either side of the trunk. The success rate if you get at least a few inches of root is close to 100% for me as long as I take care of them afterwards, so it isn't a hard tree to transplant at all, but the more of the mother root you get, the more initial vigor your transplant will have. Actually, because they sucker so easily, you can just propagate by root cuttings in a propagating unit if you want to. Now isn't the right time of year to move them, though, you should wait until fall or better first thing next spring. However, if you must move them now, I'd suggest cutting back the top to remove virtually all of the foliage and some of the larger branches (if any), keep watered, and odds are they will be fine, because its a tough tree and wants to live.

we move trees when they have no leaves ... what one might call .. PROPER TIMING ... unless you have some bizarre poplar.. they root rather freely ... try a few 8 inch cuttings in a glass of water for a week or so ... if yours roots easily ... root some.. pot them.. grow them on.. and plant them in fall/spring.. when they are supposed to be planted.. and then you dont have to mess around.. with rather large.. fully leafed out trees in summer ... less heavy labor.. little or no risk ... etc.. no downside ... ken
