Wow, American Beech (Fagus grandifolia) at Dawes

Not many beech grown in St Louis as yard trees. A few at MOBOT have gotten my attention. Usually though its the Fagus sylvatica Europen beech cultivars that caught my eye.

Boy does Ohio in general and Dawes in specific have some magnificent specimens!

First off the smooth straight trunks have unique texture and color w/o being odd.

They get absolutely HUGE. Two large ones are near the gift shop. My picture does not do this one justice.

Apparently enough hollow out.

This one is in a park in Cambridge OH an hour or so east of Dawes.

Check out that hole!

Here is one that bit the dust.

There are several of the purple and other beeches spread about. Notably some are near the memorial.

And of course the variegated Fagus sylvatica European beeches got my attention. Still early in the year but "rose pink" was looking pretty good. One is in a pretty prominent position, hopefully it looks good all year.

Perhaps this fall I will try running one of these down if not a regular American beech if that nyssa fails to impress...

Nope, looking pretty bad! Badly distorted, mis-shapen leaves. Yukk!

I didn't think it was at its prime either and I am well familiar with that tree as this is the arboretum I frequent, and am very fortunate it is withing driving distance. This is a world class arboretum and some of their collections are astounding it would take days to see it to good advantage.

Glad you got to visit it Toronado and hope you enjoyed the experience as much as I do.

Resin.........you have to consider the weather conditions of the American heartland where it can be negative 31 celsius in a bad winter and 39 celsius the following summer and I've seen temp swings of fifty and sixty degrees in twenty four hours. That area was also hit with a tremendous amount of freeze damage a few years back, and some flooding. This year it has been endless rains in large amounts daily, and heat..... and a lot of foliage looks a little less than prime.

The American Beech foliage looks good, though!

That "rose pink", it looks like the leaf edges shrunk (and died in places), and middle of the leaves got too large for the edges. And that's a character of that cultivar wherever it is, not just that individual specimen.
