Need trees for screening/blocking out commercial buildings, sign

Hi, I am new to this site and would love some help. I have a major problem with commercial buildings and a sign being visible from our backyard since we are located next to a major street with an alleyway in between. The building is 23 ft tall and the width of coverage we need is 28 feet. We need a couple of evergreens that will completely screen these ugly commercial sights but I am getting conflicting advice about which tree would be best. We have a gate in the middle of the wall that cannot be blocked which means we need to have trees on either side of it. What trees would be best in providing the most blockage while also being nice to have in the yard? Some that have been suggested are Camphor, Pepper, Oak, Ficus, Carrotwood and olive trees. We live in Los Angeles. Any advice, suggestions and information will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

How big is the space in the yard that you can fill? What sort of wall is in place? Will the tree need to stay within the wall or do you own land outside the wall that the canopy of the tree(s) can extend over? What sun exposure do you have? Some pictures of the area would be helpful.

I don't have pics at the moment, but I can try to give you a visual. There is a brick wall that is about 9 feet tall and 28 feet wide with the other side of it is an alley. On the other side of the alley are the buildings and the sign. We do not own land outside the wall - there is only the alleyway, so the tree should not really extend over. Sun exposure is good - there is no shade and we live about 4 miles from the ocean. I don't know what the exact dimensions of the yard are - maybe 28 ' x 35 '? We have neighbors on both sides.

The camphor tree would be pretty large for that space. The carrotwood may be considered invasive at the coast, so I would check with your extension office before considering that one. The closer you plant a tree or a tall shrub to your home, the more effective it is for blocking a view from the house. So if that is your goal then you may be able to get help from a smaller tree. Olive would be nice smaller tree.

Prunus ilicifolia (Hollyleaf cherry) might work for you, closer to the house.

Umbellularia californica (California laurel) could get to 40 feet.
