roadside trees leafout later than those away from road?

In my travels, it seems that this is true universally, although the evidence is all anecdotal - trees growing along the road, especially highways, seem to leaf out later than those further from the road. This is even true in rural areas.

Has anyone noticed this?

Any ideas as to why? I'm just thinking pollution + road salt causes a bit of a stunting of growth and therefore a later leafout, but I could be wrong.
