| Hello,
I need to fill some gaps to block off the back yard from the road, but it's a tough spot under a mature white spruce. My area is also very prone to deer so I need something as resistant as possible for this spot. I was going to use two spruces on the sides of the big one, but I am not thrilled with that idea of planting them so close. Any suggestions?

What exposure is that? If it is south facing, that will help since there are so many trees nearby. I wonder why you really think you need another tree in that spot? If something MUST be planted there, I would go with a low spreading conifer like juniperus x pfitzeriana 'Saybrook Gold' but that kinda defeats the purpose of planting a tree as a screen. John
Here is a link that might be useful: juniperus x pfitzeriana 'Saybrook Gold'

power lines.. and the sight line of pulling out of the driveway.. leads me to suggest perennials.. rather than something that will block the view.. unless there is some optical delusion going on .... some camera trick ken

That spot is actually South facing. I'd like to create more privacy for the back-yard from cars driving by. We planted those smaller spruces a few years ago and they grew in really nicely, but now just want to fill in the gaps. Good point about blocking the view, what about something right behind the big spruce (pic 1). Then it won't block the view and connect the two areas of trees.

vpr80, that's an eastern white pine, not a white spruce.

Is that big pine long for this world? Other than the low fringe, are there living branches above what seems to be the power line level?
