| I planted some elm tree seeds in the yard that I picked up and now I have seedlings. Who knew? I have five in a six inch circle. Should I leave them alone? Try and separate them? Maybe put in a pot til next year? How big should they be before I disturb them? Will they survive the winter planted out of doors?

| one thing .. lol WHO KNEW.. ya.. go figure on all that .. lol ... i will yell... DO NOTHING TO THEM WHEN THEY ARE IN LEAF ... you will most likely kill them ... in fall when neked ... figure out what to do with them.. i suggest leaving two .. if you like that spot ... eventually culling to one ... and pot a couple if you want to learn about growing trees in pots ... and the trick there is the MEDIA you use in the pots ... i have millions of seedlings from the Siberian elms of the neighbors.. it doesnt surprise me it was just that easy ... and if that is the elm you are dealing with.. just mow them down.. and find some better tree seed to play with ... my county.. had 10's of thousands mature trees damaged in an ice storm a few years back.. what a nightmare.. and it has other problems also.. and should not be within about 50 feet of your house ... you need to ID what you have.. good luck who knew.. lol ken

Here is a link that might be useful: not a strong tree

| If they are already in the ground and you want them there, select the 2-3 best ones and cull the others. Next year cull down to the best one. If they are in pots, then you can separate them later on this summer or wait til fall. I had handfull of Cedar Elm seeds I put in a pot last year and ended up with about a 100 or so seedlings. At 4-5" height I began to separate them out and repotted about 30 of them during the summer. Gave the others away. This native species of Elm is very hardy and will live with minimum of care. |
