Will a lopped-off Red Oak sprout new branches?

From Superstorm Sandy, we had a lot of tree damage. I have a mature Red Oak that snapped in two about 16' up from the ground. I cut it clean w/ a chainsaw (on a slight angle) where the end is about 18" in diameter. I wonder if it will eventually try to sprout new branches near where it was cut off? (My White Ash trees behaved that way. Maples also do that.)

If not, I guess we'll have a nice totem pole.
