Need Advice About Redbud Tree

I have a redbud tree that is about 10 or more years old. It has 2 trunks growing out of the base trunk. I just noticed that on one side of the base of the trunk it looks like there is some disintergration going on - not sure if some insect has been chewing it or what, but the wood is fine and crumbly. I also notice further up the trunks that there are some fine holes in the bark and in some places, the bark is slightly peeling. Although there are green seed pods on the tree, the leaves are green, no dying leaves, the leaves turn a bit downward - which my other redbud doesnt do.

Could this tree be infected with an insect? I am not very knowledgable about trees - roses and daylilies are my area of expertise - so would appreciate any help with this tree - i.e. spray, fertilization, etc. It is a lovely tree and I planted it when I first moved here 18 years ago, and would very much like to save it and see it thrive - any help would be appreciated. I can take photos if needed. Thanks for any help!
Judith

I have one who does the same thing.........and it's the second redbud there, a volunteer off the first. They are not long-lived trees and when they hit their second decade you might want to be considering planting another to take its place.
