| We've had this tree in my parent's yard since I was a kid and it was big then. My dad and I were just talking about what kind of tree it is and we have no idea. Anyone know based on my shoddy pictures?

Kind of hard to tell from the pictures, they aren't enough fine detail. Are those berries in the third and fourth images? Dark colored little berries? If so, it could be a Hackberry, Celtis occidentalis.

I also think it's hackberry. It's a native tree here and when we found one growing we didn't plant we left it to develop and it's turned into a nice speciman. It's the host to the hackberry emperor butterfly and hackberry and sugar berry are its only foodsource. The berries are also widely eaten by birds. Not long-lived but a pleasant tree and very tolerant of less than perfect environmental conditions.

I think they are berries and yes they are a very dark green or a black. I looked on the ground for awhile and there are no leaves or tree sections laying around for closer inspection. Thanks for all the suggestions! I'll go with Hackberry it looks like.

For sure, or it's sugarberry, which is another type of hackberry. +oM

Tom, I would say the leaves are not consistent with the native sugarberry (too large in the pics) and the fruit is also not a match (also much too large). I bet your first instinct was right ;) In my humble opinion, sugarberry make very interesting specimen trees and should be planted more! John

Is the picture from last year, or has it berries already in mid may? Truly a handsome tree, I will try to find one for my woodland

Yer probably right jO. I've never knowingly even seen a sugarberry. That bark can really only point to one or the other, and given your comments, it must be hackberry. The species is quite variable. If you are lucky enough to get some good genetics, a very elm-like vase-shaped tree can be had. There's some along the Mississippi River in La Crosse WI that have that look. Big, tall, lots of clear trunk until the branches begin, and an almost identical umbrella top like A. elms often displayed. +oM
