You have one of the serrulata cherries called 'Kwanzan' which are blooming now. Many people don't realize how large they can get when they first plant them as you can see by this pic.

Thank you so much! That looks like it. As I said, it's very pretty, so we can just trim it up a bit. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't going to be some tree we would wind up hating.

you can buy a new one for 20 bucks... why spend a hundred.. to save or prune a plant that was inappropriately sited ...????

cut if flush to the ground apply stump killer .. fix the house.. and go buy a new one .. and space it properly ....

Well, like I said, I did cut down a lot of it, so we can let it stay. It didn't cause any damage yet.

I definitely do not want to try to take it down myself. I saw on a website that these trees have short lifespans (15-25 yrs), but I'm telling you, this thing is huge. I climbed out of my attic window to get on the 2nd floor roof, and still, the branches were going way up over my head. I'm no expert, but I'd have to say that it's more than 25 years.

It's pretty, so it can stay.

It's ironic, though, because my wife wants to get a Japanese Yoshino Cherry Tree.(I posted in another forum). Similar, but not quite the same.
