Tree ID needed

There has ben this tree(actually a few growing together) growing behind my shed for years. Has very nice pinkish or white flowers in the summer and the tree has been hard to id so far. The tree is about 10 feet tall and hasn't grown taller for years. Pictures will show leaves, multiple trunks coming out of the ground, and the many saplings that are growing around the base of the trees. Bark is strong and doesn't peel easy. Leaves are palmate with usually 5 small lobes and some smaller lobes in between that on some of the leaves. Some leaves only appear to have 3 lobes.

Hmm that is a very good guess but from the pictures I've seen i'm not entirely sure. I haven't been able to get a good leaf picture of that tree type online so ill probably have to wait for some more people to post. If you have any more suggestions of pictures I will try go get them

i also think it is hibiscus syriacus, a.k.a. rose of sharon.
you can see the remains of last year's seed pods.
they come in many flower colors and are abundant reseeders.

Yes I think you might be right. The pictures I see on the internet are pretty similar to the tree or shrub as it may be. The only thing that makes it a little bit harder is that the leaves on the same plant are not the same on the whole plant so it makes it a little difficult, but based on what I see it probably is a hibiscus

It is Hibiscus syriacus. The leaves are often variable plus you have the old seed pods there too.

I see some people say there are different varieties like 'helene' or 'lady stanley'. how would I id which type it is?

Also in the picture of the base of the shrubs there is a plant with 3 large leaves in the lower right. any idea what those are?

Identify cultivar when in flower. There are many, you may have to work at it a bit if it is not one that is currently prevalent in commerce.
