I have lovely Weeping Cherry in my front yard but there's an additional, different tree growing out of it, with white blossoms. Is this something to do with grafting? Did something go wrong or should I just ignore it? It doesn't look too bad except the "new" tree doesn't actually weep. It sticks up and looks like someone forgot to comb the hair on the back of their head, lol.

Looks like you already know what the problem is... yes, its almost certainly a shoot growing from below the graft. Cut it off and keep doing it til it stops.

the understock in the grafting process .... is grown for it aggressive roots ... and is upright ... and probably has a lesser flower and flowering pattern ... and.. it is not weeping.. so .. what they said ... get rid of it .. the white part i mean ... its more aggressive than the weeper.. and can take over the whole.. given enough decades ... ken

Thanks. When and why will it stop? I mean, typically?

It'll run out of gas if you continue lopping it back. Impossible to say how long it might take, but certainly doable. Cut it now, as close to its point of origin as possible. Then watch for resprouts and cut them off. Rinse and repeat until your hair has that silky shine....I mean, until the little b*stard gets tired of the battle. +oM

Sometimes a root grapht will start to sucker a lot if the root collar is covered... Maybe less of a fight if the grapht is not simply trying to sprout seeking oxygen rather than carbohydrates...just sayin'... Mackel
