Ornamental Plum tree struggling!

A few weeks ago we had our landscape guy plant a beautiful, 25 gal. ornamental plum tree in our yard. He seemed to know what he was doing. He told me to go ahead and deep water it a few times at first, and then just let the drip line take care of it. I followed his instructions. Now, 3 weeks later, I think this tree is in serious shock. Leaves are falling off. And the ones that aren't falling off have copper-looking, dried spots. And parts of MANY of the leaves appear to be dry and disintegrating. Poor tree. I began the deep watering again but don't know what to do. HELP anyone? Unfortunately, I don't know much.......

What part of the U.S. are you in (I'd like to know USDA zone) and about how tall is the tree? Any idea whether your soil is clay, sandy or what? Has it been rainy there?

I am in California (central coast wine country). It is hot and dry. Zone 8. My soil is heavy clay which I've been told is highly nutritive here. There are ornamental plum trees growing very well all over this entire neighborhood and town. So I know they can do well in this particular clay. My soil holds water well, so somehow I doubt this is a lack of water. Although the nursery told me to water it more. Don't know what to do. Its losing a lot of leaves.
