| We're looking into buying a condo with a small courtyard in the back. The current owners have a (roughly) 17'x20' area of the courtyard that is a kind of rock garden thing:
What we'd like to do is take out the rocks, put him some grass, raised plant beds around the perimeter and plant a shade tree in the center. We would love to plant a Mimosa but wasn't sure if the space would be big enough for it. Any ideas on how easy it would be to train the Mimosa through pruning? We'd definitely like a single trunk and we want to be able to enjoy being able to sit under it. Think it could work? |

| I think you would find it was a lot of work in the long run. Albizia can get about 15 feet wide, so would basically fill your space horizontally, and about 30 feet tall. And, its a fast, vigorous grower. It could be done, but you would have to devote time to pruning it at least yearly. You might be better off choosing a more size-appropriate tree for the space. |

| Thanks. Sounds like it might be too much tree for us. I was also just reading in another thread about how invasive they are and that they invite wasps. Might not be a good match for us after all. Think I'll start a new thread for suggestions. |

| Most of the trees I plant are left to rip and attain their natural size, but I have one I mistakenly planted in a tight spot, thinking it was a different variety. It dawned on me a few years down the road I messed up and located the label. Two choices rip it out or keep it pollarded. I chose the later, since I know how to do it, but it's a giant pita on a regular basis and involves ladder climbing, and hanging out of windows with pole pruners. |

| I sure would re-think your idea to change the grade of the soil next to the foundation! |
|
| Rhizo: I really wouldn't change the grade at all. If you look at my photo, the area is already "raised." I would just increase the area of lower elevation in the center for the lawn. LOL Calliope! I am visualizing the whole thing... BTW, pass my love and regards on to the folks in the Party. Been lots of life changes and several years since I've been on GW. My husband has a severe brain injury, etc., etc., etc.... |
