Good replacement screening tree?

We have a small yard, that butt's right up against our neighbors, the kind of situation where everyone's looking into everyone else's windows. Right now there are two fairly large acacia trees providing some screening.

The acacia trees are very messy, which has always been less than optimal, but now the roots are starting to pull up the concrete patio and fence (I guess their roots are notoriously shallow?).

We're considering replacing them, but I know *nothing* about trees and have no idea what would be a good option.

I guess preferably I would like something that could still provide some good screening for second story windows (though I'm guessing whatever I get will require some time to get to that size?), and would be at least a little less messy.

Any suggestions or even help about where to start doing research and what I should be looking for would be super appreciated!

Thanks

You are apparently in the desert southwest, but you don't say. It would help to know.

Oh, sorry, I thought I filled out my zone along with the form, but I guess I did it wrong. According to, http://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMWeb/, I'm 10a. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area.
