We now have a house on a few acres that we are slowly getting the overpopulation of pine taken out. We want to plant trees that we can purchase and plant here. What trees would thrive here. Our land is not level but soil is pretty good for the oak tree and cotton wood and pecan tree already here. None of these are in our backyard area where we would like to plant. We live in a border city so we are very close to Texas. We have high summer temps and some issues of moisture. Very, very mild winters usually. I like japanese maples, evergreens but many others as well. Due to our age I need to consider how fast the trees will grow.

You have lots of choices, and I have personal favorites. However I'm going to suggest that you follow the link below from the U of A Extension service to look for suggestions. You can also look for a list of suggested trees from Texas A&M. Most of those for eastern Texas should do fine for you as well. Arktrees
Here is a link that might be useful: Shade trees

Here's some good choices with some fall color. Willow Oak grow about as fast as oaks can and are favorite for shade trees- yellow fall color. White oaks are spectacular, moderate growers-red fall color. Cedar Elm - tough, drought resist, moderate growth - muted golden-orange in fall. Shumard Oak - red fall color. You have so many choices. Is your yard well-drained or flat? Moist or dry? Alkaline or acid soil? ~ elevation?
