Several years ago I purchased two identical dwarf peach trees. The first one died back but not totally: it continued to grow but much straighter: I dug a bit and it seemed to be coming from the same original base. The second one is doing quite well: purple leaves and I always get some peaches. It's about five feet tall. The first one now is about 20 feet, straight, and has green leaves, but otherwise identical foliage. I almost thought it was a willow--long, narrow leaves--but today I noticed very small peach-like fruit on it. Never saw fruit on it before. The two trees appear to be two different species. Any ideas as to what is going on?

yes.. the graft of the named peach.. on the first.. died and was probably way up on the trunk ... and you are now growing the root stock .. which as you are finding.. is not really a fruit producing stock ... you might get a better answer in the fruit forum .... and a picture would sure help .. IMHO.. get rid of it ... you are wasting time and space on a tree that YOU KNOW.. wont produce ... what more do you need ... and NO GUILT.. as you will plant another tree to replace it ... ken

Personally, I would wait a few months and see what it's like. A number of peach rootstocks produce decent fruit, and I've had a couple that actually produced fruit with excellent flavor, but very small and quite late. The problem is knowing exactly what you've got, and you really won't unless it came labeled with the specific rootstock used, or unless you grow it out. Since the OP has invested this much time in it, and now has small fruit, might as well wait the 2-3 months for the fruit to ripen and see what they are. If they're not good quality or otherwise disappoint, then the ax.

Unless you bought a purple-leaved peach intentionally the purple-leaved one is liable to be a rootstock.
