Identify my tree?

Hi! I was hoping somebody here could help me identify this tree in my backyard? I know absolutely nothing about the plants at our house and am trying to figure out exactly what I've got going on. This tree is fairly small, has very strange gnarled branches and they are extremely brittle - I'm afraid it may be dying! I would appreciate any help in figuring this out!
