How to keep woodpeckers away?

All the sudden a woodpecker has started attacking our pine tree out front - odd since we've never had them before. So far the damage isn't too bad but if we let it go on it will. Anyone have any suggestions for getting rid of them? I don't know if woodpecker-repellent would be feasible for a tree that size - it's about 4' in diameter and 100' in height. This tree is very dear to us & we'd hate to lose it. My swing hung from it when I was little.

do you know the difference between a woodpecker and a sapsucker ...

i am wondering if your tree has bigger problems than one bird.. at 100 feet.. how much damage can one bird do ???? one might suspect.. that it has been coping with birds of this type for a long time...

pines are rather short lived trees.. compared to others.... you might want to get us some pix.. to see if we can see anything wrong with it ....
