Wetwood on Elm?

Posted by commok 10 (My Page) on

I have an Elm tree that has two weeping holes on it that I think may be wetwood, but am not sure. The tree itself seems to be doing fine, just wonder what, if anything, I should do about the wounds. Thanks!

Here is a link that might be useful: GardenWeb

RE: Wetwood on Elm?

Wetwood diseases are very common in elms. There is no treatment other than doing everything you can to keep the tree stress-free. This might mean something as simple as considering a two to three inch mulch layer in a large diameter around the tree, though never piled up against the trunk. You might even water the area if you've not seen rain in several weeks or months.

Trees with wetwood can live for many, many years as long as nothing else is stressing them out or causing problems. A good ISA Certified arborist will know what you can do to keep the tree healthy and happy, but there's no treatment of any kind. (A BAD tree guy will suggest all kinds of injections, applications, and magic elixirs.)
