No evidence of nuts. But the leaves do look like the picture I took. I also attached it to this reply.

I took a guess and figured it had to be some sort of fruiting tree, though; thought perhaps it was a pecan tree. I know (or believe, anyway) that those have to have a mate planted nearby to fruit, so that's how I excused the lack of droppings.

I also like black walnuts, but be sure to google "black walnut toxicity" before you plant too many more.

I have a few black walnuts and there is always some evidence, but we might be talking a dozen big trees between me and my neighbor to the south.

If you have the right area I love their branching structure, its like they know their wood is hard and they're tempting fate lol.

There are really a few trees with the compound leaves like that I have MUCH difficulty telling apart. Fraxinus americana, white ash, is one. My ash which are big enough to have "mature" bark like that have the small mini maple like sees/samaras hanging from them right now. I guess yours would if it was an ash....

Guys, w/o waiting for it to fruit, how can we tell a Juglans cinerea, butternut, from a Juglans nigra, black walnut?

Right, I agree it is a Juglans, but wasn't willing to say it was definitely a black walnut (J. nigra) vs. J. cinerea .
