no oak in my neck of the woods.. puts up suckers.. but hen we dont have evergreen oaks ...

where are you in z10???

and why do you think they are suckers.. rather than from acorns??? have you tried digging on out??? a squirrel could have brought it from down the street ...

my first thought was poplar or cottonwood .. but that is a WAG ....

name the trees in the neighborhood ...

Well, they certainly look like one of the evergreen/southern/western oaks.

Is there a tree like them around the area they popped up. Any suckers I've seen from root grafts are near the parent tree. Otherwise I guess its a seed grown tree. My guess.

It almost looks like a vine.

RE: Are these twigs from Oak Tree Roots?

While visiting a friend last year, I noticed a grand old Bur Oak in the backyard and we walked to the back to admire it. We talked about some of the small oaks I had recently planted in my backyard. He showed me a twisted little seedling that had started growing near his house foundation that he was going to dig out soon. He asked me if I wanted to dig it out now, and so I did, but it was tough too get a good root ball due to the location.

It didn't survive the winter in the pot, even though I kept it in the darkened garage and periodically watered it. Or so I thought. I cut it down and was about to dump the soil out when I noticed a small green sprout at the base. It's now a seedling with leaves and about 5" high.

One of the Bur Oaks I got from a big box store and planted last spring has a small seedling growing a couple inches away from the trunk. I'm not sure if it's a separate seedling, but will do a little digging when the soil's not so dry.

I'm surprised that you found a Burr oak in a big box store! Glad the little one made it. If it was mine I would put it where you want it to grow forever, and protect it from deer and bunnies with a fence, until it gets big enough that they may look for smaller trees to abuse.

Actually, last year both Lowe's and Home Depot in the Chicago area had them at times. I don't think I've seen as many this year, but they do have Northern Red Oaks. I want to try to grow the little ones to a decent size to give them away, I sadly don't have room for them to grow to maturity in my yard with all that I currently have unless I plant them close to something that won't live so long. And I already have three young white oaks (Swamp, White, and Bur), and three young Northern Red Oaks.
