Perhaps Symplocos tinctoria, known as sweetleaf or horse sugar. Around here they do retain a few leaves.

^5 esh_ga, this appears to be none other than Symplocos tinctoria or Sweetleaf. Some of them are as much as 20' tall. This is the kind of tree that will never be found at the big boxes, not flashy enough.
It ranges as far north as the DelMarVa and stops, so does the range of the beautiful little King's Hairstreak which uses Sweetleaf as its sole food source.

Funny, I just saw the same planted in groupings at the Hagerstown City Park near the lake & was wondering what they were.

The museum building there also had 2 large multi-trunked serviceberries in front loaded w/newly developing fruit.

I'm reading that the genus Symplocos has as many as 8 species in Mexico and southward but only this one comes into the US. Here is my tree today:

during the dormant season small trees can be divided from the parent tree with a sharp spade. I suspect that the large, wild populations that can be found are clonal in nature just like pawpaw.

Remarkable, beautiful yellow fall color on this Sweetleaf. The yellow leaves are from 2016. The green leaves will remain until this time next year and they will turn color. This is a great, smallish tree, native, tolerates wetlands and wildlife asset, also one of my favorites.
