While planting a young Ruby Falls weeping redbud I accidentally broke the leader (the top 12 inches). This leaves a tree only 3ft tall. Does this mean that my tree will now never get any taller? Is there a way to make a new leader so it can grow more? It's a beautiful and pricey tree. I'd hate to think I ruined it. Help! Thanks in advance. Laura

To make a new leader, bend (ease... don't break!) an upper branch into a vertical position by attaching it to a temporary stake that is attached to the tree or inserted into the ground. Don't worry about the "bow" in the branch where it beds. Over time, as the tree thickens, it will virtually disappear.

i would not bother staking it.. cut off the broken part.. and KEEP IT PROPERLY WATERED FOR THE REST OF SUMMER ... its a tree.. it will put out a new leader.. if you give it enough time.. keep it alive.. and dont kill it with too much love ... i have done it dozens of times... dont worry about it ... the tree isnt bug enough.. nor the trunk thick enough.. to take the weight of the stake.. and the bindings.. let it do its own thing ... and dont fertilize it trust me ...ken
