Death to a Tree

Greetings tree peeps,

I have an unwanted cottonwood that I allowed to grow to a 30 ft tall tree before I realized it was sucking too much water from my vegetable garden and I want that to stop.

I live in the country and the tree is way in the back area of our property...I have a lot of woodpeckers so I will not remove the tree but allow the woodpeckers to live in it if I can kill it.

Here is what I did...please tell me if it will die. I cut the bark, cambium and into the actual hard wood of the tree all around in a ring at the bottom of the tree. You could say it would be similar to a deer scraping off bark and killing trees. I did that a couple weeks ago, I know that the tree still has stored energy and pushed out leaves and looks completely healthy with no ill affects. How long will it take for the water intake to stop and the tree to die? I just planted up my veggie garden and want to make sure that this tree will no longer be an issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
