| This maple was planted about 4 years ago. It has a wooded area on one side that blocks a lot of the sun. I can't take out any of those trees because it is not my property. The crown has grown very little on that side. The trunk is also bending towards the sun.
Will this crown eventually look more symmetrical? |

| Jb, that must be some pretty dense shade. The maple almost has to get more growth on the shaded side but I wouldn't count on it getting close to even. There just is not much reason for it to grow to the shade for no light. |

| Yeah the tree won't grow in a way that it knowlingly won't benefit it, and growing towards the shade won't benefit it. |
|
| There's nothing I can do? I was thinking about trimming some of the branches on the sunny side. Or trying something nutty like tying a line to the one side to prevent any more bending of the trunk . |
|
| Well I guess you can try to thin out the other side... but I think getting the whole trunk to lean the other way is next to impossible. It will grow where it wants to. |
|
| It will always grow towards the sunlight. Always. No matter how you trim it, new growth will be directed towards the sunlight either by focusing the energy in buds on the sunny side or water spouts near the pruned area that lean towards the sunlight. If the shape of the tree really bothers you, you could cut it down and plant a nice mix of shrubs and perennials that are appropriate for the sun exposure. John |

| Yes.........the only way trimming will help is if you trim the tree shading it ;-) |
