| We have some Nuttalls in our neighborhood doing the same thing, they still have a little red tinge to their leaves. They must be a particular cultivar. Any idea why these trees are planted to excess recently in my area of the country? I'm all about "natives", but technically it's not native to NC and they are EVERYWHERE! |
|
| jq - they are the latest fad with landscapers looking for a fast growing oak that is "urban" tolerant. Good parking lot tree, that is. |
|
| Yup, my whole neighborhood is full of them! Basically every new neighborhood/shopping center in this metro area has them planted. |
|
| In my area I haven't seen any like this but mine. In parking lots here they plant maples and crabapples and never care for them after they plop them in the ground. I have seen other people post on here that they have the same colored Nuttals oak. I can't remember if it greens up later in the season. |
|
| It greens up but the newest foliage will have the red tinge. The good ones are quite showy! |

| poaky, Is yours a 'New Madrid' seedling? Nice article about it in the most recent issue of "International Oaks", publication of the International Oak Society. "New Madrid" produces colorful spring foliage of red and purple from mid April to mid May. Found in the most northern part of the range in Illinois, "New Madrid" is from a large mature tree found by Guy Sternberg of Starhill Forest. The color on the newly emerging foliage plus its deep green color throughout the summer and its scarlet fall color make a great ornamental oak. These characteristics come true from seed. |
Here is a link that might be useful: Q.nutalli 'New Madrid'

| Lucky, A few years ago it was possible to get these from StarHill, but now I can't find them listed anywhere. Do you know if they are catching on in the propagation ranks? I see some Nuttall's with similar color in the area. Those that I have seen with the best spring color end up with the best fall color as well. Anyway, I may have to replace a tree and was considering Nuttall as a possible replacement if in fact I have to replace a tree. Thanks for your time, |

| arktrees, The blurb that I copied and pasted above was from an OIKOS TreeCrops online catalog - but looking at the current OIKOS website, I don't see it currently listed - but Ken may have some New Madrid seed line seedlings available. I think Guy has assigned all the Starhill Forest cultivar selections to Forrest Keeling Nursery in MO - might check out the FKN website. |

| The tree wasn't marked as anything other than Nuttals oak. I got it from Lowes 5 or 6 years ago, when they got in a bunch of oaks from Mossy oak Native nursery. They haven't gotten alot of oaks in since. It has good fall color too. Mossy oaks nursery online hasn't got them listed, but maybe they have a limited amount they didn't list. |
