Extreme Norway spruce?

I'm thinking about what to plant on a piece of family land. The site gets mostly full sun on deep, somewhat sandy river-bottom soil, and it's in the western piedmont/foothills of North Carolina, zone 7. Could a Norway spruce (Picea abies) survive and thrive there, or are the mountains the only place for them in my state?
I love hemlock, but too much of a pest problem.

Norway spruce is very adaptable. No trouble at all in the NC piedmont -- may do OK even on the coastal plain.

Norway Spruce defies its native range in adaptability. I'd think it will do just fine. I've seen healthy ones in Atlanta, IIRC.
