Sorry it didn't work out with the q virginiana! I have prepared myself to eventually lose mine to a cold snap sometime in the future but it is still going strong so far ;)

When you went to Florida, did try to procure a small one in a container? That seems to be the only way I can remember you haven't tried.

I tried a 5 ft one back in 2009 I think, and it defoliated and I should've waited to see if it leafed out. I pulled it up in the spring. The roots had really spread through the soil just over the winter, I had to dig down far to uproot it. I have had success with the Quercus Fusiformis. After giving up nearly on it, it's looking good now. I have a picture posted. Photobucket I just hope it isn't a super slow grower here. I may order another Quercus Virginia online and grow it in a pot and put it in my unheated greenhouse. I don't hold much hope for it outdoors here. It never got colder than 8 or 9 F above zero, and the 2 seedlings from Virginia are dead. If the Q Fusiformis grows good I will be happy. They may need pruned to be more treelike unless they only grow shrubby in the dry areas. What form do they take on in Arkansas? I am interested on any info anyone can give on the Q Fusiformis.

Can't comment on the fusiformis form as I don't have one, but my virginiana grows as a very vigorous dense rounded tree but it is still rather short, about ~5' I think. I has been growing about 2' a year since I planted it in '10 (a 2.5' branchless pencil thin trunked whip) but wants to go wider than tall which I think is a growth trait that will continue possibly all its life. I am committed to clearing out any tree that gets in its way as it ages while I am still here on this property. The only other virginiana I am aware of in the area is in a park and it looks terrible (no irrigation the past two brutal summers while it was trying to establish). I have seen them for sale at big box stores in fairly large sizes though.

It doesn't seem to really hit its growth spurt for the season until it gets a little dry. Like now! This is the second flush of the season =) Oh and mine survived a low of 3* winter of '10-11 as well as several days that never made it out of the teens. The leaves did turn a brownish green after that but it sheds all remaining leaves when the new growth pushes out in the spring anyways. I am a little surprised 8-9* killed you seedlings. Maybe they were sensitive being so young.

Your tree is beautiful, I'm jealous! Yeah the Q Virginiana that died in 8 or 9F above 0 were very small about 8 inches tall and thin as an average size nail in trunk size. I don't know if I'll get to go to Florida again, my friend is selling her RV, I've always gone with her. I am trying Kelly Green trees online to see if I can order a hybrid VirginianaXFusiformis called the Heritage live oak. I sent an email to them, and haven't heard back but it's Memorial day weekend, so I understand why there's no answer. I may have some of these Virg X Fusifomis hybrid acorns planted, the person who sent me a bunch of acorns said they may be hybrid seed/acorns of the 2 live oaks. I should've wrote down who sent them. Anyways, in my yard, I haven't had below zero F for at least 5 or 6 years. We have low 30's and low 20's for weeks at a time and then 7, 8, 9 above zero for 4-5 days in a row. It didn't even defoliate the Q. Fusiformis, but killed these tiny Q Virginianas. Your winters are probably not as long in duration as mine, I may try the QV again but keep it protected as long as possible. The ones I tried that died were protected by burlap on the sides, with the top open, and looked good until the last few weeks. I think it must be duration. I am hoping I get some hybrids of Fusiformis X Virginiana from the acorns or Kelly green trees. The acorns are slowly sending up green. It will take a while to see if any are hybrids. I labeled them and the ink faded. But anyhow, You are lucky you can grow QV there. I would imagine you may have to water in really dry times, but that's no big deal, the shade and looks of the tree are priceless.

Well I have 10 seedlings of QV coming from SC . I got them from ebay. I know I'm nuts. They will be protected well until they get some good size to them. I have a sunroom kit to put together. I will try overwintering them in the sunroom, unheated, and some in the ground with a small popup greenhouse. Then a few in the basement. etc.

Perhaps you will eventually stumble upon a cold hardy seedling that has a slightly slower growth rate than the species due to the shorter growing season and it could be aptly named and marketed as Quercus virginiana 'Poaky Oak' :D
