That's a big trunk -- typical. Mine's 30' tall and 11" in dia at the base after 8 seasons.

how old? guessing 7-10 years (just for fun)

I grew it from one of those "Tree in a box " kits and it's been in 2 yards. After I moved I took it with me. It's been in this yard for 11 years. The move probably set it back a little. It looks good with leaves, but not so much leafless. It has crossing branches. I tried pruning it so it had good form and it just got even worse, to the point you can't get the saw blade in position to saw the inner branches off. I used that spray to stop suckering sprouts and the tree has a mind of it's own. So I gave up.

"I used that spray to stop suckering sprouts" -- just curious, what are you talking about? Is there some kind of spray to stop suckers and watersprouts? Does it work?

I would love it if there were, I have some from rootstocks I have fought for years, especially on my bosc and anjou pears that are grafted on quince.

If I sprayed suckering sprouts I'd be afraid of killing the tree.
What's wrong with cutting or breaking them off?

That one and the bald cypress are both on my short list of 10 favorite trees!
Looking real good.

Thanks Njoasis. Botann and denimi, it's called suckerstopper and it's a spray I got online. It won't hurt the tree but if you rub off or cut a sucker and apply it, it's supposed to prevent regrowth, it worked with my Sycamore. The tree is dead now from borers, but I used this stuff on it 7 or 8 years ( only once) before the tree died. If it worked on the DR the tree just wildly suckered along the trunk where it wanted in untreated areas. It's a spray ready to use but it's easier for me to use a small paint brush. I am going to try it on my Swamp white oak, it';s sending them up from the roots.

So...., you don't spray the sucker itself. You spray the 'stump' of the sucker?
One of my Dawn Redwoods is getting some size too. I planted this one in 1979.

Yeah, just the stump. Now that one has some size to it!
