Transplanted Crab Apple Tree...Dying?

First, a little background on the tree in question. I bought a foreclosure in January that had been owned by a landscaper. There was a crab apple tree in a large (18-24") plastic nursery pot sitting in the dirt in a corner of the yard, so come springtime, I dug a nice hole and planted it.

The spot it's in has good drainage, decent-looking garden/topsoil, regular watering and about a half day of sun (morning). The tree is looking progressively more awful; the sad little leaves it did manage to grow are yellow and falling off. I scraped a bit of bark off some branhes and the trunk (which is perhaps 2.5-3" in diameter) and the branches seemed more dead than alive, but the trunk was definitely green.

Is this tree on its way out? Is there a way I could save it? Fertilizer? I thought maybe I need to give it a season to sort itself out. We had a fairly chilly winter (in Central Oregon), plenty of nights below freezing and two or three decent snowstorms. It's been in the ground for two months or so. Any advice would be most appreciated.

Maybe it's too wet. Dig around in the planting hole to check.

this is your new house.. yes??

dont you have enough things to do and worry about .. than this thing..

listen.. you tried.. gave it a shot.. be done with it ...

seriously.. do you want to look at it for the next 2 or 3 years.. wondering if it will survive or recover???

its not worth it ...

First, refer to Ken's post above, but, if you're still thinking about it....

"Is this tree on its way out?"

Kind of sounds like it. At least it's not happy. Since we don't know its history or much about how you planted it, we can't tell much about what's wrong. The link below might help give you some ideas if the problem is planting related.

"Is there a way I could save it?"

Impossible to tell at this point. Unless you are doing something wrong (over watering, under watering, etc), only time will tell.

"Fertilizer?"

%*#@ $+^( NO!!!!

===>>> to sum it up.. this thing could have been sitting in that pot for 2 years.. during the foreclosure.. and have never been tended nor watered .. and that aint good ...

no amount of love.. from you.. will overcome the abuse ..

yes its speculation ...

if you are an experimenter .. have fun with it.. but dont let it get you down ...

if you are a worrier.. get rid of it

Thought I'd update you all (took the advice of "leave it alone") ... tree seems to have come around! Has some new growth and I will prune off the dead stuff. Glad it didn't take very long!

took the advice of "leave it alone"

==>>> what a hoot, jim .... no one gave that advice.. i reread 3 times.. lol ..

i am glad.. you knew the variables.. your options.. and did what pleased you .... and are happy about the result ... in the end.. that is all that matters ...
