| 10 leylands are being offered for free, 5-7' H 2-3' apart. The owner wants them gone now. Is it too hot to move them? what are the chances they will survive?
should i diy or call a pro? |

| To give them a decent chance of surviving the transplantation, somebody will have to dig a decently sized hole. Somebody will actually have to dig 2 decently sized holes, one to get them out, one to put them in. Then when they are re-planted, shock will inevitably follow and you will lose at least one year of growth, assuming they all make it. If one fails, then you will have 9 weeds...er, excuse me, 9 Leylands in a row of one size. Finding one to fill in the gap could be a problem. Going to a Lowe's to get 10 more will set you back about 200 dollars. These trees will grow and surpass the 10 free ones in a year or two. Now for the rest of the story. The current homeowner realizes what he/she has done. They have planted a fast growing, canker prone tree that grows very wide, very tall. It is easier to give them away than pay for their eradication. If you have the room for 10 of these, I would instead plant a mix of trees. Some for bloom, some for foliage, some for wildlife. This gives you interest far above what a group of identical hybrid, overused evergreens can give. My advice is to graciously decline the offer if it is a friend. A simple "No thanks" if it is not a friend. |

| Thanks so much for the advice, I won't go through with it. I was considering it since we spent $3600 last year on 12, 12' leylands, we needed quick privacy around our pool. I wanted to extend that privacy along the whole length of our shared fence with our neighbor. Thanks for the advice on mixed trees, however we already have 30 trees on our half acre lot and I do not want any more deciduous trees to add to our fall clean up. will a long hedge of leylands really look so terrible in the long run, even if they're staggered? |

| They look good down here while they are healthy. The problem has been that keeping them that way has been difficult. They have been prone to disease (limbs dying)and bag-worm infestations. In addition they are not drought tolerant for this area. Lost 8 of 20 5-yo trees last year during record heat and drought and we were watering them. They either seem to be growing or dieing and have been a high maintenance tree. Most people plant them way too close. Would recommend selecting another native conifer or ever-green for a screen. Good luck with your choices. |
