hey.. new tree mom ... with proper mulching.. the temps .. short term.. are not relevant ... until the soil temps start climbing.. insert finger.. you know the drill ... i usually say.. water when the soil is dry.. or hot.. hot usually meaning .. it will be dry soon ... at which time.. you still ONLY water.. WHEN THEY NEED IT ... otherwise .. we have been there all week ... and i have only watered the recent transplants.. the rest of them are on their own ... 'established' trees should be able to cope ... [and i am talking about transitory heat.. not the extended drought like that GA post] good luck with your babes.. ken

97F here Friday -- about the usual summer high temp in my rural area. Fortunately a Tstorm complex moved thru around 9pm & got 1.37". It was one of the most active electrical storms I've ever seen -- lightning every half second for an hour. Power out for 12 hrs. The below image changes every day.

beng, Lucky guy. could we ever use the rain............... -10.5" on the year so far, and losing ground FAST. Check the link below for how much rain you need to end your drought. Note Northwestern Arkansas where I am located. Arktrees |

Pretty lucky...i've been near the Minnesota deluge and I've picked up 3.24" this month...although some of that came in a downpour so that didn't help much.

I've used thousands of gallons of water in the last few days at my place trying to keep everything alive. I'm hoping it will be enough. We aren't that far behind on rainfall here for the year, but the last few weeks have been very dry.

Thanks everyone for responding. Good luck to you, Brandon and Ken with your trees. I hope all our watering pays off. I hate that my sandy soil holds no water. Trees may like it, but it makes for a PAIN to irrigate. Think I gripe about it on here, imagine living with me! lol My husband likes to remind me that 20 (well now 22) trees was MY idea. All I know is we need to install a spigot or whatever you call it outside. That's our project for next year, and then maybe install some sort of watering system, because all this watering is for the birds! And speaking of birds, they LOVE my watering. They are always hopping over the trees' fence and drinking the water or giving themselves a bath. It's actually pretty adorable...

Not knowing what "trace" means I've had 0.6 inches of tabulated rain according to AccuWeather since May 7th. April 1st to May 6th was a whopping 1.9". That makes my 90 day total 2.5". June brought more 90 degree days than we'd typically see in an entire year, I guess thats the icing on the steaming pile that mother nature left for us. As if the witch didn't do enough damage with 80s in March and significant freezes in April.

"Trace" is a non-measurable amount of rain. It can range from just a few sprinkles to rain which was just enough to wet the asphalt but not quite 0.01".

Anyone know how to get to the NOAA monthly precipitation by zip code? I was tooling around for quite some time and the navigation on that site is horrid.

Whaas. Check around at http://water.weather.gov/precip/ Also, lots of articles out there on how to import various .gov data into google earth. Fun and good detail maps if so inclined.

The situation here in Sweden is totally different. This summer has been a lot colder then normal, and also much wetter. Stockholm had about 5" of rain in june, wich is the most since the measurements started some 250 years ago. Also, the temperature has not been over 75 in all june, mid day temperature has been around 55-60 degrees. So I still wait for the summer to come...

60 degrees with rain sounds pretty damn awesome right now. Can't even be outside without sweating bullets in the blazing sun.

After a wet May and much of June, seems to be getting arid again. Hot daily but without the tropical feel--you know the air so wet you can cut it with a knife. Sun is brutal though. Seems we just alternate between drought and floods now.

So 105 was about the warmest we got. I gave the newly planted trees a good long drink twice during the heatwave. The trees I planted last fall at my parents' place luckily got a natural dousing.
