| I found a local nursery that sells fine looking, good sized trees. Around 2"-3" caliper (diameter right?)
Well, they sell last years B & B trees, about 18" to 24" burlap ball, for half price. For instance their London plane trees that went for $125 is now like $68 bucks. Also, they will sell a pickup truck full, as many as you can fit for $200 bucks. I didn't buy any at the time because I didn't have any help/man power to do it. My question is should I buy a tree(s) in this situation? A part of me said no, they have been balled to long. Another part of me said yes because it was a great price, they take very good care of their products and they are state certified. I also wanted to get feedback from you guys here on the tree forum. Thanks. |

| are you one.. with an inclination to betting money on sports games... and thrilled to win.. and can accept loss??? if so.. then gambling on this.. would be no different ... roll the dice.. go for it ... if you are the 'worrying' type.. and this would be our last $200.. skip it ... shall we presume.. no warranty??? what is your experience level with LARGE trees??? how big is your truck ... lol .. i always joke with guys loading my truck .. if they will follow me home .. and get the darn thing out of the truck for me ... the easy part is watching them hoik it in.. how the heck to get a 200 pound ball out of the truck, 3 feet off the ground .. and over and into the hole.. is a BIG DEAL .. can that all be handled w/o rupturing your back??? for the $200 .. frankly.. if ONE lived.. you would be even up ... and if 2.. you are ahead of the game ... all this said.. without HEAVY equipment ... i dont know how the average homeowner deals with this size stock ... is it really within your physical capability???? and finally.. IMHO.. they are too big ... smaller stock will take transplant easier.. get established faster.. and outgrow this size stock .. to be clear.. it can be done.. by professionals .. with warranties.. large equipment ... and many young men to do the hard labor.. you pay for much more than the tree itself.. but you dont end up in the hospital.. and if they fail.. they replace it ... will there be any warranty??? ken ps: if they had bargains .. at about half that size.. it might be a better deal.. subject to the variables listed above |

| For a case of beer I can get as many bubbas as I need to wrangle those things for me- I'd go for it if I needed that many large trees and had the knowledge to plant them properly. I'd sure choose the smaller ones, though. |

| If they looked reasonably healthy... for $200 a pickup load... I would make several trips and be damn near broke by the end of the weekend LOL Nobody says you have to immediately plant them. You could dig shallow holes and plop them in and then cover with mulch and a drip emitter or soaker hose and wait until fall to plant them. Having been dug so long you know they have actually increased the density of their root mass in that root ball and might not be much worse off as long as they have been getting good soaking watering regularly at the nursery. How do you think some trees would fare if I drove to New Jersey and took a load home? You tease... John |

| I'd be on them like fly on poop. I worked a nursery and loaded those suckers myself plenty of times and I'm a girl (well an old gal is more like it). Like said, even if you only have a tiller, rip some sod up, make a trench, heel them in, mulch and keep watered until you find some help planting. Borrow a bobcat or a decent garden tractor with a front end loader. Buy beer and beg. If you do it they will come. |
