tree for pergola

Hello, I would like to plant an unusual specimen to train to the opening of my pergola. My pergola is 7' tall and the opening is 6' wide. I live in Vermont in Zone 4a. I saw a twisted needle larch (Larix kaempferi 'Diana') that I thought could be a possibility but the zone is 5 and of course that is questionable. Oh also, I have full sun. Any ideas for an interesting tree to train in this spot? I am looking for an alternative to the regular vine here. Thanks so much for any input.
