"mudding in" bareroot trees

Totally off the wall for the time of year, but has anyone done this? I never have, but could see why it might be useful.

Basically, when planting bare-root, you fill in with a mud slurry to make sure the soil fills in around the roots w/o air pockets. With a fibrous-rooted tree especially this could be helpful.

However...what I wonder is, since you shouldn't "work" or dig in saturated soil, due to the risk of overcompaction, would the mud slurry do the same thing (create basically a concrete block around the roots) or does the "extra" water (past the point of saturation) make the soil particles "settle" in a natural sort of way?
