Maple Tree / Trunk Rot

Rubby

I do not have a picture, but can probably get one. But a friend of mine has a maple tree. In the main trunk, where all of the main branches split off, there is a hole. The water collected in the hole, along with insects, and the tree began to rot. With fear of losing the tree, he cleared out all of the rot and got back down to fresh wood.

However, what can he now do to stop the water and insects from collecting back in this hole? My best suggestion was to build some kind of a cover, or even plastic, to prevent the water from getting in there, but thought I would try to get some additional ideas.
