Once a tree across the street from me was broken about four inches from the ground. Considering it wasn't my tree and it wasn't completely snapped in two, I went out with my cordless drill and some drywall screws and screwed it back together. The tree lived and eventually covered the screws only to succumb to verticillium wilt during a dry spell a few years later. Now this was a 2 inch thick Autumn Blaze maple (red x silver), so if any tree were to survive such an ordeal, that would be it. However I'd probably attempt the same or similar (duct tape, nails, rope, etc) fix again in the future if the situation came up.

I tried tying together (with wire) a branch on a hemlock that was torn off by my kid, it was still green and looked to be growing...it looked great when I got it back together (thought it might "graft" itself)...not a chance. It dried out and is now brown and dead... moral of the story is to prune it out and deal with it.

One of these days we'll read where someone saw this thread, had a child with a broken arm, put two and two together, and decided to liquid nail their kid's arm back together. Kinda different...but kinda the same.

Well, they use glue on cuts now, probably won't be long before they figure out how to glue broken bones together. lol

Ken, four or five years ago my large crepe myrtle sustained a massive split down one of the main branches all the way to the ground which my brother and I used 4 inch decking screws to hold back together. The crepe myrtle is still awesome looking to this day as it enveloped the screws.

Hurtle, those drywall screws are just about the right height for a chainsaw when cutting the dead tree down. I heat my house with wood and I get it from all over. A tree trimming friend parks his truck on my property and brings me wood and chips. Nothing worse than cutting into a screw or nail with a chainsaw. Well,...I hit a railroad spike once. That made my day. Mike |

I was up cutting wood with my brother last year, we both have the same Husqvarna chainsaw. I noted that his couldn't cut through butter with how dull the chain was...he mentioned that my nephew was using it last and made the comment ..." *several cuss words* was he cutting up chainlink fencing with this *more cuss words* thing..."... had to be there..it was funny, but true. Need to be carefull with cutting up trees if they have any metal in them.
