i once had this happen.. and the seller admitted all of his stock did the same... in other words.. it was a failure at the wholesale level ...

media plus compost.. sounds awful wet for a tree in a pot ... trees tend to prefer a drink.. and then near total drainage .... and i have no clue how much water your stuff retains ...

bad roots are a problem ... but the problems they cause.. shouldnt happen inside months ... its a very long term issue ... so all i am left with is media... and stock failure ...

i will even go so far.. as saying the transplant is near irrelevant... since the tree was dormant ... so i am back to a watering/media issue ...

No, it is about a 12 foot tree bought from a local nursery. They are typically the best place in the city.

I used 2 parts Baccto Lite Premium Potting Soil to 1 Part Baccto Wholly Cow compost.

Luckily my cherry tree I purchased at the same time is doing awesome. It however must have been brought in from somewhere south because it was already budding. this tree I would say was wintered in the pot in chicago because it was comletely dormant. I picked it because it was the only one and a bit more unique.

I could upload a pic tonight, but it a very healthy tree with lots of buds. the buds took forever to leaf and now that they are they are leafing out and dying when they are still tiny leaves.

I should say I have been watering it daily. Maybe that is too often?

you might want to talk to the container forum.. and what media to use for huge trees in huge pots ...

i think your media is too mucky for a tree ...

i dont understand why you said NO ... no to what ... that he shipped in bad stock??? .... all i suggested.. that you discuss such with him ...
