Redbud struggling in former location of Nandina

I planted a 2" cal. Redbud two months ago and it is really struggling. It flushed last month but all the leaves have browned and shriveled up the last few days. It is planted in a location that used to have a large Nandina. I removed it and most of the roots over a year ago. I read that nandinas contain hydrocyanic acid so not sure if the soil is toxic. I had a crape planted in this location last fall for about 6 months and it seemed to do fine and flushed this spring. We have had 6" of rain that last few weeks and when it doe not rain, I give the redbud a good 30 minute soaking every other day so I think it is getting enough water. Is it getting too much? I was hoping someone would have some input. Do I need to move it or are there soil amendments I can do?
