what is your base soil ...

i suspect way too much water ...

dig a hole with a hand trowel.. and find out if it needs all the water you are giving it ...

if you have clay soil.. then there is no doubt its way over watered ...

you water a tree.. when it needs it.. and only you.. can define how your soil drains and when water need be applied ...

i suspect.. you are watering on a schedule.. and guessing ... and therein lies your problem ...

i doubt the prior tree has anything to do with it ...

it is severely stressed.. IMHO.. fert or soil amendments.. will not solve stress ... and i doubt soil has had any impact on a 2 inch caliper tree in the short time since transplant ...

You are drowning the poor thing. When you water, give a good soaking and then let dry to just moist. Repeat. It may be too late for this one but wait and see if it re-leafs.
