I thought I's posted this to GW before but can't find it. Here is an American Holly growing in Michigan. I go by this area all the time and just happened to look over the right time in the right place one day. A very impressive specimen.....

Wow, beautiful. Just what we need when its 100 degrees.

I honestly didn't know they would grow like that here. Between winter cold and our generally calcareous soils, almost any holly I've ever seen here has been a pretty sad looking specimen.

Is this near Lake Michigan in the warm pocket of Berrien/Cass/Van Buren counties?

It sure is it is growing in the Zone 6 part of SW MI in Benton Harbor. Not far from the lake. This is on the edge of one of the pockets where hollies, rhodo's and azaleas seem to thrive. Certain areas you see pretty nice specimens. Not sure what dictates this but it is evident as you drive around the area. You must be familiar with our area/growing conditions. Happy Gardening

American Holly has a range from Texas to Florida northward to eastern Massachusetts. I am guessing that the winter hardiness can be quite variable.
I searched the Holly Society of America and one of their sources for plants is linked below. Since they are in your state, that might be a good place to inquire.

Here is a link that might be useful: Wave Crest Nursery
