Probably winter damage and no disease. It's hard to tell what kind of maple it is without a close up pic of the leaves.

Those corky branches suggest field maple, acer campestre, a european species. The leaves are all kind of deformed but they could very well indicate field maple as well.

Branches with no leaves are already dead, you can scrape them gently with you finger nail to see what's under the bark. If it's brown it's dead.

Kind of looks like a sweetgum tree. Not sure if they grow that far north.

The leaves aren't right for sweetgum - they *can* grow in zone 5, but are marginal except for some of the hardiest selections like 'Moraine' and a few others in bad winters like the one we just had. Saw quite a bit of dieback in Ohio a few weeks ago on sweetgums, although 80% appeared to be intact enough to recover.

I'd say field maple, maybe Trident maple - both marginal in your zone so it's probably winter damage.

I still wouldn't rule out sweetgum. Thier leaves are a little different when they are young. I have a ton on my property, I'll have to take a closer look tomorrow. I have some young and new saplings with similar leaves. The corky bark is also a trademark for sweetgums.

thanks everybody for your help. is there anything I can do to better their chance of surviving? oh and I'm not sure if sweetgum is a maple but I remember my grandfather calling them maples before he past

Agree with Huggorm.....looks like a English Field Maple (Acer campestre)
