pruning swamp white oak to single leader

I planted a swamp white oak in a soggy part of the backyard in October of 2011. It is doing well, but splits into three about 10 feet up. Want to prune to single leader and need a little advice on which one and when. I didn't prune this spring because as a newly planted tree it needs a growing season to establish. Should I prune this winter, or wait another year? Pics attached soon.

As Resin said, can't see a pic. However use Google to find the Pruning Guide produced by the University of Florida. They have guides to deal with most any type of structural problem you are likely to encounter.

Excellent advice ^. Ed Gilman there is an acknowledged leader in tree care issues. BTW, even though we constantly advise that youngish trees be pruned for single leader, it has been my experience that swamp white oaks hardly ever have any structural issues with just the way they grow themselves. Even at ten feet, it may be completely acceptable for such a tree to begin splitting into its component main leaders.

If you do elect to prune, look at the U of FL link and especially, investigate "subordination pruning". This is exactly what you will want to do.

Okay, I appreciate the input. I do like the U of F pruning guide. I also have one from Morton Arboretum, out by me. These three leaders are really close and really vertical. Subordination pruning is what I would prefer, if it is appropriate in this case. If someone can walk me through how to post the pics, I will let you see them. I opened a Shutterfly account, but the link I posted took you to my page, not the pics. Help welcomed.

It's best to wait until at least July to prune, the Beatle that spreads Oak wilt is still active until at least July, from what I've read. I've always pruned " Whenever I saw pruning needed" but want to avoid trouble with oak wilt infection. My swamp whites tend to grow many leaders too.

Even though this species isn't as susceptible to oak wilt just be patient and prune it late winter next year.

SWO consistently creates a strong central leader from what I've seen. Even the million that they planted in a business park have nice leaders.
