I bought these a while back but didnt get them planted for awhile. The roots were growing through the drain holes in containers. There are 2. The one all the leaves have dried up and I took them off, the other half the leaves are dying I left it alone.I am not sure if I am underwatering, if its the water itself, or if they are just a lost cause. The branches are still strong. The bark looks good. They about 4 feet in diameter at tops. about 6 feet tall. They look beautiful when they have leaves but not so good now. Please any help would be awesome. I havent added mulch yet because I wanted them to be healthy first. I appreciate any suggestions. Our soil is good black dirt the top 6 inches and clay underneath. I can take pics if needed. We planted 6 trees of different variety's these are only ones struggling to make it. I added miracle grow tree sticks to the one that looks really bad yesterday, should I have done this? Please help and again I never planted trees before and dont have a green thumb so any advice is appreciated.

Since this is the tree forum, you are GUARANTEED to get 2 responses:

1) send pictures
2) never fertilize trees

Anyway... it is a little unclear on your timeline... did you plant them and THEN they started dying? How long have they been in the ground?

If you JUST planted them, it could be transplant shock... check to see if the plant is being attacked by borers (sap all over the place coming from tiny holes)... I had this problem and gave the tree a systemic poison and way overwatered and the thing pulled through.

However, I have noticed that stone fruits (plum, cherry) occasionally just collapse and all the leaves dry up. The tree is dead within days. Some sort of fungus or something and I don't believe there is anything you can do.

Do mulch immediately and don't use fertilizer sticks as they are a waste of money - you want a granular fertilizer that you broadcast over the entire root area instead of paying extra to have it concentrated into sticks - which actually makes it less effective.

The idea now being repeated on this forum that trees are never fertilized is completely erroneous. Any kind of garden plant may need to be fertilized, there is no reason why one being a tree suddenly makes it impervious to soil nutrient deficiencies. It is true that you do not want to fertilize unless there is a specific indication that it is called for, such as a soil test or a visual appearance of the plant that experience has shown is likely to indicate a need.

Stone fruits are prone to multiple pests and diseases, without more information it is possible your trees were killed back (or killed outright) by a bacterial or fungal blight, or other condition that produces similar effects.

Note the name of the cultivar is spelled 'Big Cis', after Prunus X cistena - of which it is a larger growing type.

The idea now being repeated on this forum that trees are never fertilized is completely erroneous.

==>>> it is repeatedly stated ... because TOO MANY PEEPS THINK IT IS A CURE-ALL FOR EVERY PROBLEM KNOW TO PLANTS ..

and as such.. ITS POLLUTION... period..

i say it here.. i say it in conifer.. perennials.. annual.. EVERYWHERE ..

unless your soil is completely devoid of all nutrients.. as proven by a SOIL TEST.. i will stand by the comment that they never need be 'fed' but for amending the soil consistent with the soil test ... they are not children.. they dont get hungry ...

ken

BTW... they are fed when you put lawn fert on .. they are fed when you mulch the grass clippings.. they are fed when lightening releases nitrogen.. they are fed when the dog does his business.. they are fed all the time.. but they will never be hungry little children .. who need mommy and daddy to feed them ...

why encourage the use of willy nilly application of fertilizer bboy??? your water just too clean and clear..????

As I pretty much always do, in one way or another I said in the above post

It is true that you do not want to fertilize unless there is a specific indication that it is called for, such as a soil test or a visual appearance of the plant that experience has shown is likely to indicate a need
