Very nice Lou. Yellow veins in the red really makes it look good.

We don't have anything around here that turns purple like that. How long does it hold it's leaves?

RE: Blaine's Dragon shantung maple summer growth

I'm not sure. I just can't recall how long. I've had this tree for only over a year. It was maybe 8 inches tall when I got it in the winter of 2010 and now it's 6ft tall. The biggest problem is very strong north winds that my area see every fall that can blow leaves off earlier than you'd like.

There's another cultivar not yet available for sale that produces yellow leaves that do not burn in full hot sun. It looks pretty cool when I saw it at the tree farm. It's currently called Name Not Released Yet Dragon. :) It sure stands out when in full sun. I've been waiting for 2 years for it to be available... Maybe another year or two? The owner is going to patent it...

Here is a link that might be useful: Name Not Released Yet Dragon

It has grown 5 feet in your drought? I know you must be watering it.. but... dude... that is on par with my cottonwood I planted last spring. Do you have a full shot of the BD so we (I) can see the form it is putting out?

It grew to about 4 ft tall last year in the container and so far it has grown 2 ft in the ground this year so it's 6ft tall now. Actually, Ft Worth-Dallas area are largely spared from bad drought. Rest of Texas are not unfortunately. I went to Houston last weekend and it's pretty bad. I ended up having to water trees at my mom's house to try and keep them healthy.

Here is the picture of Blaine's Dragon form which isn't much at the moment plus it's windy now. Perhaps next year, it will be much fuller.

Here is a picture of Fire Dragon in the front and a regular Shantung maple in the background. You can see that yardstick leaning on Fire Dragon's trunk to get an idea how big it is.

I would sure like a Blaines Dragon. Hopefully they have some this fall. My fire dragon is great this year.

Hey Lou, how is the Blaine's doing this year?

 o
RE: Blaine's Dragon shantung maple summer growth

About a foot so far this year. It didn't help that May was a dry month as I didn't really water yard that much.

This will be the last summer I'd ever see my trees. I'm moving to Austin this summer. On the plus side, I get to look for bigger lot to plant more trees. My wife wants to be closer to family and she found a new job so I gotta leave trees behind for new homeowners to enjoy for years as long as they don't kill them.

Oh man. The new owners won't know what they have! Are you going to dig any up to take with you? Also, it looks like your facebook account is gone.

Any maple that can thrive in Dallas (other than Boxelder) is impressive. My native Sugar maples suffer a bit from hot, dry weather here in rural w MD.
