Volunteer oaks

Hi all.

We have so many volunteer oaks coming up and we are also losing some of our older trees that are dying from the top(not sure what they are, actually, but not oaks). I am interested in moving several of the oaks to better locations nearer the property line out back and to maintain our green canopy. Can't have too many trees as long as we have the space! Before I ask DH to dig since the weather will probably not stay this cool and beautiful for long (happy Father's Day!), can anyone make a prediction about how deep the tap root may already be on an 18-30 inch saplings? I would hate to kill the trees in attempting to save them.

Thanks and Happy Father's Day to all you dads here!
Cynthia

I hope you're not thinking of doing this now!!!!

When you do transplant them, you probably won't be able to get all the taproot. Get what you can, try to get a good clean cut, and don't worry about it. The transplants will develop a modified root structure that should serve the plant just fine. With oaks this size, I'd probably plan to get a rootball about time and a half as deep as what I'd get for a non-taprooted specimen (because it's practical to do so).

...also Cynthia, now is not the time to dig up and transplant trees. You would have much higher chances of success if you could do this either in the fall or next spring. Plants, especially deciduous trees, resent being moved in leaf.

Thanks, Brandon. Wasn't even thinking that we are into summer almost. No, I will wait until late fall for sure. I was just sitting here envisioning projects. Still in the thinking stage. :) I want to get the dying trees out first just to avoid having anything new trampled or injured by the guys doing that. Thanks for the links. I am always reading the advice here and will use the collective wisdom you all offer so regularly!

Thanks to you too, Tom. We were posting at sort of the same time! No, I will be doing it in late fall-as I said, I am just sitting here thinking and that usually results in projects as you all probably know well-ha-DH is over at our son's finishing up some painting at his new house with him-ain't father's day grand? ;)

It is very dangerous to leave me alone thinking about the yard...

Thanks again.
