I've read on another forum crape myrtles should be planted no closer than 6 feet from house, but shouldn't it depend on the type? I could understand if you planted one of the big ones that get 30 feet tall, but what about a Zuni? They only grow about 8 x 8- could they be safely planted closer without worrying about possible damage to foundation, say about 3 feet from house?

forget about any modern foundation.. the issue is house maintenance.. like window washing .. gutter cleaning.. painting.. xmas lights ... etc .. IMHO.. you should have a min 2 foot space.. simply to walk thru ... then spaced according to mature size.. so you dont have to go butchering it every other year ... plants should be planted to HIDE the foundation.. not really ON THE FOUNDATION ... ken

A few years ago a cold snap froze crapemyrtles here to the ground. At that time these two Zunis (planted 3' apart) were approaching 9' tall. They are just now approaching 6' again. But the width is somethng that I have to control, because (if this is typical of all Zunis) you can see the floppy nature of the growth. Before the freeze they were more tree-ish but even then had the same widening lateral spread. Hope this helps your decision. hortster

Zuni crapes readily exceed 8X8...certainly in a climate with a long growing season.
