patenting a worthwhile maple seedling

In the fall of 2011, I ordered a bunch of various tree seeds from SheffieldâÂÂs. IâÂÂve got a nice stand of mostly various maple seedlings growing now in Rootmaker pots.

TheyâÂÂre all quite young, in their second season, but a couple of the A. palmatums in particular, and even an Acer nigrum seedling seem unique enough to watch further.

If by chance one of these were to turn into something worthy of propagating as a cultivarâ¦how would I go about getting a patent for it?

If I did so, would I have to involve SheffieldâÂÂs as the seed supplier?

Finally (and I know IâÂÂm ahead of myself here), how much cash could someone realistically make off a patented cultivar? Do you sell the propagation rights to a big nursery like Frank SchmidtâÂÂs or something as a one-time thing, or do you get a royalty?
